Q&A with our new Head Boy Perry and Head Girl Grace
1. How did you both feel when you found out you'd been selected as joint Head Boy and Head Girl?
Grace - I was truly ecstatic to work with Perry as the first Head Girl / Head Boy duo. As I was already working closely with Perry in my Biology lessons, I was extremely excited to work with him officially in this leadership role. Perry is the most confident, bubbly, hard-working person I have ever met, so I honestly believe he will bring so much to the team. It is a privilege to work with Perry to represent pupils and the school.
Perry - I was so excited! The day I found out happened to be the day of our A-level dance evening, so it was definitely an adrenaline-filled day. But one I’m immensely proud of.
2. What inspired you to apply for the role in the first place?
Grace - When I was younger, as a student in Beaulieu Primary, I vividly remember the Head Girls every year visiting us on the playground and taking the time out of their busy, hectic schedule to talk to us. My admiration for the Student Leadership Team continued to grow into secondary where I saw them introducing themselves in assembly. At that point, I promised myself that I would try all my best to become the best version of myself and be an inspiration to other students, replicating what they did for me.
Perry - Well, ever since I can remember, I’ve always looked up to the Head Boy and desperately wanted to fill their shoes as a role model. So when I joined Beaulieu and found out there had never been a Head Boy before, I thought… why not? There’s a first time for everything? This then inspired me to apply. Whether I got the role or not, either way, I knew I would be showing our school community that being different isn’t something to fear.
3. How do you see your role being different or unique, especially since this is the first time Beaulieu has both a Head Boy and a Head Girl?
Grace - Personally, I view the joint Head Girl / Head Boy role as a distinct advantage. Perry and I have different qualities and I truly believe that by working together, we can achieve more. It is a unique opportunity to be part of the first joint Head Girl / Head Boy role and shape how this dual role can benefit Beaulieu Convent School.
Perry - I see our roles being different because Grace and I will come as a 2-for-1 deal. There is definitely the potential to delegate tasks, play to our strengths, support each other and work as a team when leading, which I think could lead to some interesting new outcomes.
4. What are the key values you want to represent as leaders of the student body?
Grace - I hope that as leaders of the student body, we are seen as approachable and empathetic. I hope that we can represent the school to the best of our ability. Building on the strengths of the strong student leadership team that supports us, I hope that collectively we can show our compassion, enthusiasm, and integrity to lead the student body and instil these values in others.
Perry - I definitely want to embody individuality as a leader. But I also want to lead with compassion and love, building a closer, more supportive Beaulieu community that everyone, staff and students, feels proud to be a part of.
5. How do you plan to work together as a team, and what strengths do each of you bring?
Grace - As I know Perry, I think we already recognise each other's strengths. I love communicating with younger students, both primary and secondary level, allowing me to organise enjoyable events across all year groups. Perry is a very creative individual so I’m sure together we will come up with popular and excitable events for all years alongside meeting their suggestions to further improve Beaulieu. We will meet regularly and, together with the wider student leadership team, will plan events using our individual strengths to deliver together.
Perry - I already love working with Grace. We both have such different personalities, skill sets and knowledge, which I think makes us the perfect team. We balance each other out! My energy and theatricality, paired with Grace’s calm, rational nature, will definitely bring out the best in both of us.
6. Are there any issues or areas in school life you want to focus on improving, or initiatives or events you’re excited to lead?
Grace - As a team, we are very excited to continue collaborating with the other partnering schools (JCG, Victoria College, and De La Salle) similarly to what the previous student leadership team had initiated. However, we are planning on expanding on these events, ensuring they are more frequent within the school year and especially focusing on building a well-established relationship with De La Salle for students in all years.
Perry - As leaders of the student body. I’m really looking forward to talking to students and getting to know their opinions, passions and ideas on how to improve our school. Our team also feels strongly about strengthening a connection with De La Salle school.
7. Perry, this question is just for you - What does it mean to you to be the first Head Boy in Beaulieu's history, and do you feel a sense of responsibility or pressure in taking on this historic role?
Perry - It means so incredibly much to me! Young Perry always dreamed of becoming a Head Boy, but I never could’ve imagined being Beaulieu’s first. I hope our community sees it as the first example that anything is possible, even if people doubt you. To be able to have such a fresh take on the role is a rare occurrence and it’s a responsibility I will not take for granted!
8. Who are your role models, either in school or beyond, and why?
Grace - I have always been interested in environmental science and how our choices affect wildlife and the global climate change crisis, so it comes as no surprise that the one and only David Attenborough is one of my role models. He has successfully used his platform to encourage further climate action and spread awareness on global warming, which inspires me to do the same.
Perry - It has to be the icon himself… Johannes Radebe. I’ve always looked up to him in many different ways. Not just because he’s an incredible dancer and performer! But also for his work ethic, for the way he treats people with love and respect and for the way he is unapologetically himself, despite all the challenges he’s faced in his life.
9. How do you hope to inspire younger students, especially those who may want to follow in your footsteps?
Grace - I hope to inspire the younger students through everything I do and say. By being visible in school and across year groups, I hope that younger students will see how Beaulieu Convent School has turned me into the rounded individual that I am today. I will talk to younger pupils about my experiences and highlight how I have needed to overcome challenges to become the person I am today. By sharing my experiences, I hope that other pupils will understand that it is normal to face challenges in school life and that with perseverance, they can be overcome.
Perry - I really hope I inspire our younger students to take pride in their differences! I will always believe that nurturing what makes us individual is crucial to building a more loving world. And hopefully, I can inspire our next generation of passionate leaders to see that their biggest ‘flaws’, actually make them a force to be reckoned with! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
10. What legacy do you hope to leave by the end of your time as Head Boy and Head Girl?
Grace - I hope that at the end of my time as Head Girl I hope that pupils and the school will have seen the first Head Girl/Head Boy combination as a success. I hope that we will have delivered on our planned agenda and inspired the younger pupils to follow in our footsteps.
Perry - I want our legacy to be one of action. Where people remember our dynamic team as a group that didn’t back down from a challenge. Instead, we rose to each occasion, aiming to break the boundaries of what our school thought was possible!
