The Performing Arts are flourishing at Beaulieu! Taking to the stage starts young with our Nativity plays at Christmas time. As pupils move up through the school, there are more opportunities to perform in many productions, from Choral Speaking, Scripted Drama and Dance at the Eisteddfod, to the Year 6 graduation show, practical exam evenings, and whole school productions.
Every child in the Primary School has a Music and Drama lesson each week from a specialist teacher. In these lessons, they learn different skills such as improvisation, devising, and how to use their voices effectively and safely. As they move to the Secondary School, Drama and Music are on the curriculum until the end of Year 8, when they can choose whether to take Drama, Dance, and Music as options for GCSE and then further onto A level.
Life at Beaulieu is infused with music at many different levels, and we aim to awaken a life-long love and appreciation of music in its broadest sense. Singing, music-making, and performing start young with our musical productions, orchestra, and choirs.
All children in Year 3 also have the opportunity to learn the recorder, and every child can learn an array of instruments, including singing, woodwind, strings, brass, guitar, and drums.
Music plays a vibrant role in secondary life at Beaulieu, with plenty of opportunities for students to get involved. From performing in the renowned Jersey Sings and participating in the annual Eisteddfod, to joining our school choirs (including a dedicated staff choir), there’s something for everyone. Highlights of the year include our festive Christmas carol concerts and the much-loved Summer Music Picnic on the Green, celebrating talent across our school community.
Dance is also very popular at Beaulieu, with our new dance studio being the perfect location for movement and creativity. Our Dance programme offers students the opportunity to express themselves, build confidence and develop both physical and mental strength through a wide range of dance styles.
Through Drama, studied in the curriculum and as co-curricular options, students are given many opportunities to perform regularly, whether in class to peers, in small performances to invited parents, at the Drama Eisteddfod or The Arts Centre and Jersey Opera House, through exam evenings and whole school performances. This helps to develop life-long skills of communication, confidence, teamwork, and working to a deadline.
