Why Study Psychology?

At Beaulieu, Psychology opens a window into the human mind and behaviour, helping students understand both themselves and the people around them. Through exploring how we think, feel, learn, and interact, our students develop a scientific yet personal insight into what drives human actions. They learn to question assumptions, evaluate evidence, and think critically about topics such as memory, mental health, conformity, and criminal behaviour.

Psychology also builds empathy and awareness. By considering different explanations for human behaviour, students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and motivations that shape individuals and groups. The subject’s relevance extends well beyond the classroom, preparing young people to navigate modern life thoughtfully and engage with issues such as wellbeing, social influence, and diversity. Whether they aspire to careers in healthcare, education, social work, forensics, business, or research, Psychology equips them with valuable skills and confidence for the future.

Year 12–13: OCR A Level Psychology

Studying Psychology in the Sixth Form is an exciting opportunity for students to develop independence and take ownership of their learning as they prepare for Higher Education or employment. They explore five core psychological approaches: biological, cognitive, social, individual differences, and developmental. Students investigate how each perspective explains human behaviour through classic and contemporary studies.

Students also study applied areas such as Mental Health, Criminal Psychology, and Child Psychology, examining issues like diagnosis, criminal behaviour, and treatments. Research methods form a key part of the course, allowing students to develop skills in planning investigations, analysing data, and understanding the scientific processes behind psychological research.

By the end of Year 13, students leave as confident, critical thinkers who can apply psychological principles to real-life situations. They are well-rounded, independent, and inspired to continue exploring the mind and the world around them.
