Why Study Health and Social Care at Beaulieu?
Around 3 million people in the UK work within Health and Social Care - around 1 in every 10 people. Demand for services continues to grow due to an ageing population, meaning this sector will remain vital to society and will require an ever-expanding workforce.
At Beaulieu, we aim to provide a dynamic, knowledge-rich curriculum that prepares students for this essential field. The BTEC qualification enables students to develop a wide range of transferable skills, including communication, organisation, time management, and independent research.
Year 9
A foundation year focused on developing teamwork and effective communication. Students explore the Human Lifespan, examining physical, intellectual, emotional and social development, and begin to understand how these factors influence people throughout their lives.
Year 10
In the autumn term, students work on their Pearson Set Assessment for Component 1 (30% of the overall qualification). They then study how health and social care services operate and examine the skills, values and attributes required by professionals. The year concludes with the Pearson Set Assessment for Component 2.
Year 11
Students investigate Health and Wellbeing, learning about the factors, obstacles and barriers that affect a person’s overall health. This component is assessed through a two-hour examination in May of Year 11.
Years 12 & 13: (Level 3 BTEC Qualification)
The Level 3 course is informative, challenging and highly relevant to real-world health and social care practice. Students study Health Promotion, Health Inequalities, Legislation and key Theorists. The course consists of four units, assessed through 50% examination and 50% coursework. Guest speakers and practical links to current practice enhance students’ understanding.
BTEC qualifications are widely recognised—40% of all UK undergraduates hold one. Employers and universities value the practical skills and applied knowledge students gain. Past Beaulieu students have progressed into careers such as Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Paramedicine and Primary Teaching.
