Students Embark on a Life-Changing Adventure in Cambodia with World Challenge

This summer, our students set out on an unforgettable journey to Cambodia through World Challenge, immersing themselves in the country’s culture, history, and landscapes while testing their resilience and teamwork.

The adventure began in Siem Reap, where students spent their first day exploring local markets and soaking up the sights. A visit to Apopo introduced them to Cambodia’s inspiring social causes, including the incredible Hero Rats trained to detect landmines. They also discovered the artistic treasures of Theam’s House Gallery and the peaceful Royal Independence Garden.

Evenings in Siem Reap were just as magical. Students experienced the world-renowned Phare Circus Show, blending theatre, music, dance, and acrobatics, and enjoyed a traditional Apsara cultural dance performance with authentic Cambodian cuisine. They also joined a lively street food tour and took part in a Khmer cookery workshop, learning to prepare classic dishes. A serene boat trip on Tonle Sap Lake gave them a glimpse of life along Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake.

The highlight for many was the three-day trek through the Tbeng Meanchey mountains. Beginning with a gradual ascent through dense forest, students camped beside the spectacular Tang Yu Waterfall, visited hilltop pagodas, and watched breathtaking sunsets from mountain viewpoints. Over the following days, they trekked through jungle trails, met local villagers, shared meals, and experienced traditional Cambodian music and hospitality. On the final day of the trek, they received a moving monk blessing before tackling the 1,345-step climb up Tbaeng Meanchey Mountain, rewarded at the summit with sweeping panoramic views.

After the trek, the group explored the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat temple complex, one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Wandering through the ancient ruins gave students the chance to connect with Cambodia’s deep spiritual and cultural history.

The final stage of the expedition brought them to an elephant conservation sanctuary, where the focus is on protecting Asian elephants in an environment that mirrors the wild, while also supporting local communities with alternative livelihoods to harmful practices such as elephant rides and shows. Here, students had the chance to walk alongside elephants, clean shelters, and contribute to vital volunteer projects. From planting seedlings to farming food for the elephants and assisting with infrastructure, they played a hands-on role in sustaining this inspiring initiative.

This expedition has been far more than just a trip - it has been a journey of growth, teamwork, and discovery. Cambodia’s warmth, traditions, and natural beauty have left a lasting mark, and our students return home with skills, friendships, and memories that will stay with them for a lifetime.
