The Catholic Schools Inspection

Inspection Review Highlights

We are delighted to share the outcomes of our recent Catholic Schools Inspection (CSI), which recognises the significant progress Beaulieu has made and affirms our clear direction for continued improvement.

The Catholic Schools Inspection is a framework used to evaluate schools within the Catholic sector. It considers how well a school lives out its mission and ethos, alongside the quality of education, pastoral care, and leadership it provides. The process offers both assurance and guidance, helping schools to build on their strengths and identify areas for further development.

A School on an Upward Journey

The review highlights the “great strides” made by new leadership in strengthening the school. There is a clear sense of momentum, with Beaulieu described as more ambitious, better organised, and increasingly focused on delivering consistently high-quality teaching.

A Strong Sense of Community

Our ethos of toute de charité (“all about love”) remains at the heart of school life. Inspectors recognised the warm, supportive environment and the strong relationships between staff and pupils. Pupils value being part of the “Beaulieu family,” demonstrating positive attitudes, kindness, and respect in all aspects of school life.

Excellent Pastoral Care and Personal Development

High-quality pastoral care continues to be a key strength. Pupils feel well supported and known as individuals, enabling them to thrive both academically and personally. A rich programme of PSHE, leadership opportunities, and community engagement helps pupils develop confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of social responsibility.

A Broad and Enriching Curriculum

The review praises the ambition of our curriculum from early years onwards, alongside a wide range of co-curricular opportunities. Pupils are encouraged to explore their interests, develop their talents, and even lead new initiatives. Academic outcomes at GCSE and sixth form compare well with other Island schools, with strong progression to university and other pathways.

Leadership and Vision

Senior leaders and governors are recognised for their clear vision, strong moral purpose, and commitment to continuous improvement. Staff are fully engaged in this journey, contributing to a renewed sense of optimism and shared purpose across the school.

Looking Ahead

While the report celebrates many strengths, it also identifies clear next steps. These include continuing to strengthen teaching and learning across all subjects, further developing provision for pupils with additional needs, and enhancing middle leadership and curriculum consistency.

We are proud of the progress we have made and remain ambitious for every pupil as we continue to build on these successes.

The Jersey School Review Framework (JSRF)

The Jersey Schools Review Framework (JSRF) is the island’s process for evaluating and improving schools. It provides an independent review of key areas, including teaching and learning, pupil achievement, wellbeing, and leadership.

We use this process to reflect on our practice and continue improving outcomes for all our students.

Summary

We are celebrating a highly positive outcome following our recent review under the Jersey Schools Review Framework. The report recognises our rapid improvement, strong academic performance, and clear strategic direction.

Reviewers praised the leadership and the progress being made across all areas of school life, highlighting a growing sense of ambition and organisation within the community.

Strong Leadership and Clear Direction

Reviewers noted the impact of our new leadership team, describing it as “spot on”. Parents echoed this view, commenting that there is “a clear sense that the School is on an upward journey… more ambitious and better organised.”

This renewed leadership has been credited with helping to drive improvement and strengthen the overall vision of the School.

Outstanding Academic Progress

The report highlights strong academic outcomes across all key stages, from younger students through to sixth form.

Beaulieu now ranks in the top 10% nationally for student progress, with several subjects achieving results in the top 1% according to ALPS national benchmarking data.

Our Headteacher, Matthew Burke, said:

“We are determined that Beaulieu is recognised not only for its exceptional pastoral care, but also for the strength of its academic provision. The progress we are seeing reflects the ambition of our loyal staff and the commitment of our children and students.”

Teaching, Learning and Student Achievement

Reviewers identified a strong focus on teaching and learning across the School. Early reading was highlighted as a particular strength, reflecting the emphasis placed on foundational skills.

At sixth form level, our students continue to progress to a wide range of universities and career pathways, reflecting high-quality preparation and support.

A Strong Culture of Care and Belonging

Alongside academic success, we were praised for our pastoral provision, described as “first-rate” with a “deep-rooted culture of care”.

Students were recognised as “thoughtful, kind and courteous”, with many describing a strong sense of belonging and referring to the “Beaulieu family as a real thing.”

Broad Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

It was recognised that our wider offering was also commended. Our students were described as being “saturated, in a good way”, with opportunities across sport, the arts, leadership, and academic enrichment.

Values and School Ethos

Despite a period of significant change, reviewers noted that Beaulieu remains firmly rooted in our founding principle of toute de charité (“all about love”).

Reviewers recognised how this ethos, combined with strong leadership and moral purpose, has helped create a renewed sense of optimism across the School community.

Meeting Jersey Standards and Looking Ahead

Beaulieu was confirmed to meet all eight Jersey Standards for Independent Schools, including safeguarding, welfare, and educational quality.

Looking ahead, Headteacher Matthew Burke emphasised continued ambition:

“We are ambitious for every child and student in our care. While the report acknowledges the progress we have already made, it also highlights where we go next. Our continued aim is to further strengthen a School where academic excellence and pastoral support go hand in hand, allowing every young person to truly flourish.”
